A timelapse video of the processes involved in making an ancient map of the Tefr world.
I used the Hereford Mappa Mundi as inspiration. It’s a medieval map dating from around 1300. I found the colour very appropriate for what I wanted. It seemed appropriate to emulate the way the compass directions are rotated diagonally rather than North being at the top.
I also copied a few of the illustrations of cities and people, then kept that same primitive style for the remainder.
Most of the work was done using Affinity Designer which I’ve come to appreciate as a delightful and solid alternative to Adobe Illustrator. I have Adobe Illustrator and have used it for years, but now find it over-blown and often frustrating.
The drawn illsutrations were done using a rough brush in Photoshop and my clunky Wacom tablet (which is strangely very good for this kind of thing, if a little slow).
